JANUARY 19TH GAME RE-CAP - Rangers vs. St. Michael's
Jan 25, 2013, 3:18 pm

The Oakville Rangers BHC escaped with a shoot-out win this weekend against the St. Michael’s BHC.

The Rangers Mike Balaban who has been on fire and one of our most consistent players opened up the scoring at the 16:41 mark assisted by veteran leaders Chris Chapman and Adriano Fiacconi.

Sniper Tony Talevski answered for St. Mike’s just over 4 minutes later with assists by Giummarra and Carreira. Both teams exchanged numerous chances before the Rangers Peter Provenzano took the lead assisted by Vic Ferreira. Rangers added another goal on the power play courtesy of Tyler Dubroy with assists by Norm Stewart and Devin Shannon. Rangers with a 3 to 1 lead after 20 minutes.

St. Mike’s continued their relentless attack but veteran tender John DiNardo who was seen drinking from Vic Ferreira’s water bottle (containing the fountain of youth elixir) made some spectacular saves until the 12:58 mark when Mark Elvidge brought them to within one goal, assisted by Schrom & Macri.

The goaltending clinic continued on both sides with Anthony Flores turning away some key scoring chances and DiNardo maintaining the Rangers one goal lead. The Rangers seemed to put this game out of reach for St. Mike’s with a Mike Balaban power play goal with just over 8 minutes remaining, assists by Fiacconi & Dubroy.

St. Mike’s turned this game around in a hurry showing great commitment and heart battling back with great ball control in the Rangers zone. Countless shot after shot at the Rangers net resulted in a Chris Lima goal assisted by Schrom with 2 minutes remaining. This energized them even further attacking the net and controlling the game, Flores left the net to add the extra man which rewarded them with the tying goal in dramatic fashion with just 8 seconds left on the clock. Goal scorer was Tyler McFadden & assists by Macri and Schrom. Tyler Schrom had a great game with 3 assists.

The game ended in a tie with both teams earning a point each. Shoot-outs would determine which team took the extra point.  Both goalies made some terrific saves and the Rangers would come out on the winning side.

Oakville goal scorers in the shoot-out were Norm Stewart (shoot-out wizard) with a highlight reel backhand goal (candidate for the goal of the year) and Mike Balaban buries one for the win. Jon Macri had the lone goal for St. Mike’s.

Also noteworthy for Oakville, Paul Stewart played an impressive game. His tenacious style of play shows he is all heart and he never gives up. Paul blocked a Tony Talevski slap shot with his face, went to the dressing room and bandaged up the wound only to return to finish out the remainder of the game. After the game he went to get it stitched up. “This is what we do” he said.

“Determination, initiative and persistence are the foundation of success”

Rangers will close out the regular season on Saturday January 26th at 3:15 pm against the Danforth Demons.
